Waaree opens battery storage factory with bigger-than-planned capacity


Waaree Energies Ltd‘s subsidiary, Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd (Waaree ESS), has commenced operations at its 5.15 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) container manufacturing facility, the company said in an exchange filing on Thursday, July 16.

The facility’s capacity has been upgraded from the originally planned 3.5 GWh following debottlenecking of production throughput and improvements in the energy density of battery cells.

Shares of Waaree Energies rose as much as 1.14% to ₹2,845 during Thursday’s trade.

According to the company, the facility is equipped with Industry 4.0 technologies, including Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), intelligent material handling systems, automated assembly lines, and advanced testing and quality assurance systems.

Designed for utility-scale as well as commercial and industrial applications, the facility will manufacture Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) containers aimed at delivering scalable energy storage solutions.

20 GWh manufacturing roadmap

The company said the BESS container facility is the first milestone in Waaree ESS’ 20 GWh manufacturing roadmap. During the current financial year, it plans to operationalise a 5.15 GWh battery pack manufacturing facility, upgraded from the originally planned 3.5 GWh, and a 3.5 GWh lithium cell manufacturing facility.

Waaree ESS said the facilities are expected to strengthen the domestic energy storage ecosystem, support India’s clean energy ambitions and reduce dependence on imported technologies.

Focus on integrated energy storage

The company said Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are becoming increasingly important as India expands its solar and wind power capacity, enabling renewable energy generated during the day to be stored and supplied during periods of peak demand.

Through integrated manufacturing of lithium cells, battery packs and BESS containers, Waaree ESS said it aims to build a comprehensive energy storage platform. The investment, it added, supports the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives while offering locally manufactured energy storage solutions.

Commenting on the development, Sunil Rathi, Director, Waaree, said Battery Energy Storage Systems are critical for supporting India’s clean energy transition by ensuring grid stability, energy security and sustainable growth. He added that the commencement of the BESS container manufacturing facility is an important step towards building a fully integrated energy storage ecosystem, with planned capacities of 3.5 GWh of lithium cells and 5.15 GWh of battery packs.
