Wedding costs can run into lakhs: What to know about insurance protection

A wedding may be planned months in advance, but an unexpected disruption can alter the financial calculations behind the event. For families making advance payments for venues, accommodation and multiple vendors, a cancellation or postponement can involve more than simply changing the date.

Piyali Chatterjee Konar, Executive Vice President and Head – Customer Experience/UX/B2B at Hansa Research Group, a consumer insights and full-service market research company, said families can spend anywhere between ₹20 lakh and more than ₹1 crore on weddings, depending on their scale and location.

She said families can face financial losses if a wedding is cancelled, postponed or disrupted because of external events such as extreme weather, vendor failure, travel issues, medical outbreaks or venue-related problems.

“A large share of the budget is often paid upfront as deposits and advance bookings,” Chatterjee Konar said, adding that even a disruption can result in unexpected costs.

The financial implications can involve several parts of a wedding.

Vikram Puri, MD of Archer Hospitality, an Indian hospitality development and management company, said larger weddings involve venues, accommodation, décor, food and beverage, entertainment, transportation and multiple specialised vendors.

According to Puri, a postponement or cancellation can affect advances paid to several vendors. If the wedding is rescheduled, families may also face revised rates, additional accommodation or transportation costs and expenses such as reprinting invitations.

Destination weddings can involve another layer of financial commitments.

Chatterjee Konar said they involve travel and accommodation arrangements for a large number of guests, while Puri said destination weddings can involve higher spending.

From the hospitality side, Chatterjee Konar identified bad weather affecting outdoor functions, vendor cancellations, power or technical failures and guest travel disruptions among the issues that can affect wedding arrangements.

Where does wedding insurance fit in?

Wedding insurance is intended to provide financial protection against specified risks associated with a wedding. The protection available depends on the individual policy and the events it covers.

Akarsh Mathur, Vice President – Hospitality at The Deltin, Daman, a luxury five-star integrated resort, said hotels typically have contingency arrangements, but certain disruptions can remain outside their operational control. These include extreme weather, medical emergencies and unavoidable postponements, he said.

“Wedding insurance can add an important financial risk-management layer for families in such situations,” Mathur said.

However, insurance does not automatically cover every reason for cancelling or postponing a wedding. The policy terms determine what is covered, along with applicable exclusions, limits and claim conditions.

Puri said awareness of financial protection exists among families dealing with large wedding commitments, although he described actual adoption as low.

For families considering wedding insurance, the relevant question is therefore not simply whether a wedding is insured, but what specific financial risks the policy covers and under what circumstances a claim can be made.
