Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen will sit out Saturday’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field. NFL Network reporter Cameron Wolfe confirmed that Allen and most of Buffalo’s starters will not play.
Why is Josh Allen not playing today?
The decision is mainly about health and evaluating the Bills’ depth rather than giving Allen more preseason snaps.
The Bills and Browns held a joint practice Thursday in Berea, Ohio, giving Allen and other starters valuable work against an opposing defense.
Bills head coach Joe Brady said the starters could get 40 to 50 reps during the session and described the joint practice as being “as regular season as it gets.”
With that work already completed, the Bills have little reason to risk Allen in another preseason game. The focus against Cleveland will instead be on younger players and roster battles.
Allen will be replaced by Kyle Allen at quarterback. Wolfe reported that a few young starters could still see action, but most of Buffalo’s first-team players are expected to sit.

Allen’s preseason debut
Allen played in the Bills’ preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 15. He completed 6 of 8 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown in Buffalo’s 29-14 victory.
It was Allen’s first preseason appearance since 2024.

Josh Allen’s 2025 season
Allen started all 17 games for the Bills in 2025, completing 319 of 460 passes (69.4%) for 3,668 yards, 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He finished with a 102.2 passer rating.
He was also a major threat on the ground, rushing 112 times for 579 yards and 14 touchdowns, the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback that season.
Allen was named to the Pro Bowl after helping Buffalo finish 12-5 and earn the No. 6 seed in the AFC.
The Bills defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-24 in the Wild Card round before losing 33-30 in overtime to the Denver Broncos in the Divisional Round.
