What is an ex-date and why does it matter?

The ex-date is the date from which a stock trades without the benefit of a declared corporate action, such as a dividend or rights issue.

Investors who buy shares on or after the ex-date are generally not eligible for the announced dividend. To receive the payout, investors must hold the shares before the ex-date, subject to the applicable record date and other eligibility conditions.

For buybacks and rights issues, investors should check the respective company announcements for the specific eligibility criteria and terms.
