EPFO members can no longer activate UAN on member portal: How to do it now

Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) subscribers will now have to use the government’s Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG) app to activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) or generate a new UAN, following a major technology upgrade by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

The services are no longer available on the EPFO Unified Member Portal. Instead, users must complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT) through the UMANG app to activate an existing UAN or obtain a new one.

The change comes after EPFO restored its upgraded Unified Member Portal following scheduled maintenance. According to the retirement fund body, the exercise involved software upgrades and database consolidation aimed at improving the speed, security and reliability of its digital services.

How to activate UAN through UMANGSubscribers who need to activate their UAN can follow these steps:

  • Download the UMANG app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
    Open EPFO Services.
  • Select “UAN Activation” under “UAN Services Through Face Auth.”
  • Complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the activation.

How to generate a new UANEmployees who need a new UAN should:

  • Open the UMANG app.
  • Go to EPFO Services.
  • Select “UAN Allotment and Activation.”
  • Complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.
  • Follow the remaining instructions displayed on the app.
  • Existing EPF members can also obtain a UAN

EPFO said employees who already have an EPF account but were never allotted a UAN can also generate one through the updated process.

They will need to verify their registered mobile number, enter the required member details and complete the authentication process. Once verified, the UAN will be generated and linked to the existing EPF account.

UAN retrieval feature available

Subscribers who have forgotten their UAN can retrieve it by entering their registered mobile number, uploading the required identity or address proof and verifying the one-time password (OTP) sent to their mobile number. After successful verification, the UAN can be recovered.

Death claim process unchanged

EPFO has clarified that the shift of UAN-related services to the UMANG app does not affect the settlement of death claims. Eligible nominees and legal heirs can continue filing such claims through the existing process.
