The state government has said it wants to narrow this gap but is facing financial constraints. Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said the government is working on ways to arrange funds to increase DA.
Why is there a DA gap?
The state government has cited its financial position as a key constraint. According to Roy, Tripura earlier received around ₹4,000 crore a year from the Centre as revenue gap funding. The assistance has since been discontinued.
Roy said the 16th Finance Commission has advised states to increase their own revenue to meet non-plan expenditure. He also said the discontinuation of revenue gap funding applies to states across the country.
Is a DA hike coming?
The government has not announced a specific date or percentage increase in DA. Roy said Chief Minister Manik Saha has been discussing ways to arrange funds to release additional DA and reduce the gap with central government employees.
The minister said the issue has also been taken up with the authorities concerned.
For now, therefore, there is no confirmed timeline for the next DA hike in Tripura.
How many employees and pensioners could be affected?
Tripura has around 60,000 state government employees and nearly 40,000 pensioners. Any increase in DA would therefore have a direct impact on a large number of employees and retirees receiving benefits linked to government pay and pensions.
What happens next?
The key factor will be the state’s ability to mobilise additional funds. The government has indicated that it wants to reduce the 19-percentage-point gap, but has not yet committed to a specific hike or timeline.
