EPFO lowers overall litigation backlog as part of special drives


The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation) has intensified its efforts to reduce litigation through mission-mode initiatives aimed at faster disposal of pending cases across various legal forums.

As part of a dedicated drive for consumer court cases, EPFO undertook advance identification of pending matters and fast-tracked their resolution under the outreach programme Nidhi Aapke Nikat (NAN).

This initiative helped bring down the number of pending consumer cases from 4,936 as on April 1, 2024, to 2,646 as on March 31, 2026.

EPFO has also been actively reaching out to citizens under the same programme to facilitate quicker grievance redressal and reduce case backlogs in consumer courts.

Overall litigation pendency with EPFO has declined from 31,036 cases as on April 1, 2025, to 27,639 cases as on April 1, 2026, marking a reduction of 3,397 cases and reflecting the lowest-ever level of pending litigation for the organisation.

Special focus has also been placed on long-pending disputes. Cases pending for more than 10 years declined from 8,539 to 4,665 during the period, a reduction of 3,874 cases or about 45.4 per cent.

Separately, EPFO conducted a nationwide special campaign during February–March 2026 to clear cases pending before the Central Government Industrial Tribunals (Central Government Industrial Tribunals). The drive focused on disputes related to interest payable by employers on delayed remittances under the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.

Zone-wise nodal officers were appointed to coordinate with stakeholders and tribunals, leading to the disposal of 353 appeals. EPFO said efforts are continuing for expedited resolution of an additional 650 pending cases.
