FIIs, DIIs remain net buyers as market extends losing streak to 7th straight Day


Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) remained net buyers in Indian equities on Wednesday (August 19), with domestic institutions accounting for the bulk of the day’s buying.

According to provisional data, FIIs bought equities worth ₹12,875.76 crore and sold shares worth ₹12,467.77 crore, resulting in a net purchase of ₹407.99 crore.

DIIs, meanwhile, bought equities worth ₹17,288.58 crore and sold shares worth ₹13,314.86 crore, taking their net buying to ₹3,973.72 crore.

Together, FIIs and DIIs recorded a combined net purchase of ₹4,381.71 crore in equities during Wednesday’s session.

The latest figures extend the buying trend seen in the previous session. On Tuesday, FIIs were net buyers of ₹1,651.53 crore, while DIIs bought equities worth ₹2,579.31 crore on a net basis, according to provisional exchange data.

The combined institutional net buying on Tuesday stood at ₹4,230.84 crore.

The data shows that both foreign and domestic institutional investors remained on the buying side for a second consecutive session, although foreign buying moderated sharply on Wednesday compared with Tuesday.

Separately, the Indian equity market remained weak on Wednesday, extending its losing streak to seven sessions. The Nifty managed to hold above the 24,000 mark, while 34 of its 50 constituents closed lower.

The Sensex fell 326 points to 76,910, while the Nifty declined 77 points to 24,078. The Nifty Bank slipped 23 points to 57,240, while the Midcap index fell 131 points to 63,409.

IT stocks erased their opening gains after CLSA downgraded most large-cap names. Financial stocks relatively outperformed, with the Nifty Bank ending near the flatline.

Capital goods stocks saw a sharp fall, with Hitachi and CG Power among the top losers. Defence stocks were also among the top midcap losers, with BDL declining 3%.

Page Industries extended its losing streak, falling 3% in the session and 12% this month. Select NBFC stocks saw buying, with PNB Housing among the top gainers. PB Fintech rose more than 2%, while Info Edge gained 2%.

Market breadth favoured declines, with the advance-decline ratio at 1:2.

The rupee closed at 95.75 per dollar on Wednesday, compared with Tuesday’s close of 95.68 per dollar.
