Here is what the two features mean for UPI users.
What is UPI Tap & Pay?
UPI Tap & Pay allows users to make payments at NFC-enabled POS terminals by unlocking an NFC-enabled smartphone and tapping it on the terminal.
Unlike a regular UPI QR-code payment, the feature does not require the user’s smartphone to have an active mobile internet connection. The POS terminal’s internet connection is used to process the transaction, according to NPCI.
Can you make a UPI payment without entering a PIN?
Yes, but only up to a specified limit.
UPI Tap & Pay allows transactions of up to ₹5,000 without entering a UPI PIN. For transactions above ₹5,000, the user has to enter the UPI PIN on the POS terminal.
The feature supports multiple UPI-linked account types, including RuPay credit cards linked to UPI.
Where can you use UPI Tap & Pay?
The feature requires both the smartphone and the POS terminal to support NFC. Therefore, it can be used at NFC-enabled merchant terminals rather than at every POS machine.
What is MyUPI?
MyUPI is an AI-powered platform developed by NPCI using its small language model, FiMI. It is designed to bring information and support related to UPI transactions and AutoPay mandates across banks and UPI apps into a single interface.
The platform also introduces controls that users can use in certain situations.
What can users do through MyUPI?
One feature is a ‘Safety Switch’, which allows users to request that UPI debit transactions be declined if they suspect their account has been compromised.
Another feature, UPI Number Delink, allows users to delink their mobile number for receiving UPI payments.
MyUPI will also provide additional information about a beneficiary before a payment is made. This is intended to give users more context before they complete a transaction.
The platform will also have an automated chargeback facility for eligible transactions, allowing users to initiate chargeback requests in real time. NPCI said this is intended to reduce the time taken to resolve eligible transaction complaints.
Can users repeat an old UPI payment?
MyUPI will include a ‘Transaction Replay’ feature that allows users to recall and repeat past transactions using any UPI app.
Does MyUPI replace existing UPI apps?
No. MyUPI is being introduced as a support and control layer across the UPI ecosystem. It is not a replacement for existing UPI apps.
NPCI said the platform will also provide 24×7 multilingual support and self-service options.
The announcements come a year after the introduction of biometric authentication for UPI. NPCI said biometric-authenticated UPI transactions crossed 6.29 billion as of August 31, 2026.
