India’s broking industry adds over 5 lakh active clients in August: Who gained the most

India’s broking industry added around 5.12 lakh active clients in August, with leading digital platforms accounting for a significant share of the net additions, according to data from the National Stock Exchange (NSE).

Groww added around 2.23 lakh active clients during the month, the highest among major brokers. Its active client base rose to 1.33 crore in August from 1.31 crore in July. Its market share increased to 29.04% from 28.88%.

Angel One added around 85,000 active clients, taking its client base to 67.2 lakh. Zerodha added about 35,000 clients to reach 68 lakh. Their market shares stood at 14.62% and 14.79%, respectively, in August.

Among other major brokers, ICICI Securities added around 23,000 active clients, taking its base to 21.6 lakh. Dhan added about 20,000 clients to cross 11 lakh, while HDFC Securities added around 16,000 to reach 13.5 lakh.

Kotak Securities and Motilal Oswal added around 10,000 and 9,000 active clients, respectively, during the month. Upstox remained largely stable, adding about 4,000 clients to reach 18.7 lakh.

SBI Securities was the only major broker among those listed to report a decline in active clients. Its client base fell by around 26,200 to 10.4 lakh in August.

The latest data highlights the continued concentration of active clients among large online brokers. The industry added more than five lakh clients in August, with the largest platforms accounting for a substantial portion of the increase.The growth in active clients also comes as retail participation in India’s equity markets remains broad-based, with digital platforms continuing to compete for a larger share of individual investors.
