From hobby to business: How a Delhi woman built a handmade decor venture

A hobby of making small handmade items during college has grown into a business for Delhi-based Renu, who now makes handmade home decor products and works with eight other women.

Renu runs Golden Bell Creation, where she makes home decor and decorative products using materials such as wool felt and fibre. She produces the items based on orders and makes around 1,000–2,000 handmade products a month.

How a college hobby became a business

Renu says she had been interested in making small handmade items since her college days. At the time, she did not expect the hobby to eventually become a source of income.

In 2019, her husband encouraged her to take the skill forward. She then began organising the work more systematically and registered the business with the Ministry of Textiles.

Renu subsequently started participating in exhibitions, where she displayed her products and collected feedback from customers. She says the response from visitors encouraged her to continue developing the business. As demand for her products grew, the hobby gradually turned into a commercial venture.

Business now employs eight women

Renu now works with eight women who help make handmade home decor and other decorative products. Production is based on orders, with the business making about 1,000–2,000 products every month.

Renu told News18 that the business incurs annual expenses of around ₹2–3 lakh, while she earns an annual profit of about ₹5–7 lakh.

She says the business has also given her an opportunity to provide work to other women.

Products sold through exhibitions and online

Renu has been participating in exhibitions to showcase her products. She recently displayed her handmade items at an MSME-organised exhibition on Baba Kharak Singh Marg in Delhi, where customers bought products and shared feedback.

Her products are also available to customers online. Renu accepts customised orders as well, allowing customers to request products based on their preferred designs or requirements.

She says support from her family, particularly her husband, played an important role in helping her develop the business. Her children have also been a major motivation for her to continue working and build a more stable livelihood.
