Jio Platforms IPO: Even as foreign portfolio investors continue to withdraw money from Indian equities, some of the world’s biggest investment institutions have participated in Mukesh Ambani-led Jio Platforms’ initial public offering, highlighting a contrast between broader market outflows and demand for the upcoming public issue.

Global investment firms, including BlackRock, Fidelity, Capital Group, Schroders and JPMorgan Asset Management, feature among the anchor investors in Jio Platforms’ Rs 30,213 crore IPO, which opens for public subscription on Wednesday, October 21.

The company has allotted shares worth Rs 8,109.85 crore to 212 anchor investors at Rs 1,119 per share, the upper end of its IPO price band, according to a stock exchange filing.

The anchor book attracted institutional demand exceeding Rs 2.5 lakh crore, more than 30 times the available allocation.

FPIs sell Indian equities, but global investors participate in Jio IPO

Foreign portfolio investors have remained net sellers in Indian equities amid volatility in domestic and global markets.

According to market reports, FPIs had withdrawn around Rs 52,100 crore from Indian equities in October 2026 through October 19, taking their reported outflows for the calendar year to approximately Rs 3.12 lakh crore.

Against this backdrop, participation by major overseas investment institutions in the Jio IPO presents an interesting contrast.

However, the two figures are not directly comparable. FPI outflows represent net selling across Indian equities, while the Jio anchor book includes allocations to both domestic and overseas institutions.

The participation of overseas investors in the IPO also does not necessarily mean that the same institutions have been selling shares in the secondary market.

Jio IPO: Which global investors received shares?

According to the anchor allocation filing, several major global investment institutions participated in the offering.

New World Fund Inc, associated with Capital Group, received shares worth Rs 486.27 crore, making it one of the largest anchor investors.

The Government of Singapore was allotted shares worth Rs 340.93 crore, while the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority received an allocation worth approximately Rs 150 crore.

Other global investment institutions represented in the anchor book included BlackRock, Fidelity, Schroders, JPMorgan Asset Management, T. Rowe Price and Allianz Global Investors.

The anchor book also attracted participation from several international investment funds with exposure to technology and emerging-market businesses.

Jio IPO: Sovereign wealth funds also participate

Apart from global asset managers, the Jio IPO attracted interest from sovereign wealth funds and other long-term institutional investors.

The Government of Singapore and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority were among the major overseas institutions receiving anchor allocations.

Their participation comes as Jio Platforms prepares for one of the largest public market listings in Indian corporate history.

Jio IPO: Domestic institutions receive nearly half the anchor book

While overseas investors participated in the offering, domestic mutual funds, life insurers and pension funds also received substantial allocations.

Domestic mutual funds were allotted 2.489 crore shares worth Rs 2,784.96 crore, representing 34.34 per cent of the anchor book.

Life insurance companies and pension funds received 97.4 lakh shares worth Rs 1,089.95 crore, accounting for another 13.44 per cent.

Together, these categories received shares worth approximately Rs 3,874.91 crore, or 47.78 per cent of the total anchor allocation.

The remaining anchor allocation includes overseas investors as well as other domestic institutions. The exchange filing does not separately provide a consolidated figure for total FPI participation.

Why is Jio IPO attracting global investors?

Jio Platforms operates one of the world’s largest mobile networks by subscriber numbers and has expanded into broadband, digital entertainment, cloud computing and enterprise services.

As of June 2026, the company had 533.3 million subscribers and carried nearly 60 per cent of India’s data traffic, according to reported company figures.

The IPO will give public-market investors direct exposure to Jio Platforms, which has so far operated as a subsidiary of Reliance Industries.

The company’s subscriber base, digital services businesses and growth opportunities provide important factors for investors to assess.

However, individual overseas institutions have not publicly disclosed their reasons for participating in the anchor book.

What does the contrast between FPI selling and Jio IPO demand indicate?

Foreign investors can reduce their overall exposure to Indian equities while continuing to invest in selected companies or new public offerings.

Selling in the secondary market and participating in an IPO are different investment decisions. They can also involve different funds and institutions.

The participation of global investment institutions in Jio’s anchor book therefore shows interest in this particular offering, but does not necessarily indicate a reversal in broader FPI selling.

The response to the public issue will provide a clearer indication of demand from retail investors and other market participants.

Jio IPO price band, issue size and subscription dates

Jio Platforms plans to raise approximately Rs 30,213 crore through a fresh issue of up to 27 crore equity shares.

The IPO price band has been fixed at Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share.

The public issue will open on October 21 and close on October 23.

According to the offer documents, the offering values Jio Platforms at approximately USD 108 billion.

Part of the proceeds will be used to repay debt at its telecom subsidiary, while the remaining funds will be used for general corporate purposes.

Reliance Industries will continue to hold a majority stake in Jio Platforms after the listing.
