US Markets | US stocks fell on Wednesday as a sharp rise in oil prices added to inflation concerns. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell around 300 points, or 0.6%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.4%.
Crude oil |Oil prices climbed on Wednesday as renewed US-Iran tensions raised concerns over further disruptions to crude supplies from the Middle East. Brent crude futures rose around 3% to trade above $101 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also gained about 3% to move above $96 a barrel.
US-Iran war |The US has destroyed five Iranian tankers on Tuesday in a series of attacks between the two nations. The conflict that began in February has essentially shut down traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, where a fifth of the world’s oil supply passed before the war began.
United States Consumer Inflation | The United States will release its Consumer Inflation Expectations data at 8:30 PM IST on Thursday. The previous reading showed one-year-ahead inflation expectations at 3.6% in August, unchanged from July.
US Treasury yields | Treasury yields jumped on Wednesday after the Treasury Department said it’s going to buy back $6 billion of longer-dated government debt, which is triple the normal amount. The 10-year Treasury note yield gained 4 basis points to trade at 4.849%. Even with the increased buyback plan, yields advanced because some on Wall Street anticipated even bigger repurchases by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Peter Boockvar of The Boock Report said some thought the buyback would be as high as $7 billion or $8 billion.
