Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Netherlands: Here is why it is important to India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a 5-nation tour after the crucial visit to the UAE. As a part of this tour, PM Modi is now in the Netherlands. The visit is slated to be held between May 15 and May 17. This visit comes at a crucial time amid the ongoing wave of volatility and uncertainty in the global economy.

Some of the crucial aspects of this visit that make it important are as follows.

• The two nations conceptualised the Roadmap of India-Netherlands Strategic Partnership [2026-2030].
• The Restitution of Chola Copper Plates, which involves the return of 1,000-year-old copper plates from the Chola Kingdom Era.
• The two sides inked a Memorandum of Understanding on Mobility and Migration between the Government of the Republic of India and the Government of the Netherlands on Migration and Mobility.
• The visit also resulted in an MoU between TATA Electronics and ASML to support the semiconductor Fab in Dholera Semiconductors.

Landed in Amsterdam. This visit to the Netherlands comes at a time when the India-EU Free Trade Agreement has given a major impetus to trade and investment linkages. It offers an opportunity to deepen relations in areas like semiconductors, water, clean energy and more.

• Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Mines of the Republic of India and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on cooperation in the field of Critical Minerals.
• Letter of Intent between the Ministry of Jal Shakti of the Republic of India and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Netherlands for Technical Cooperation about the Kalpasar Project, Gujarat Water.

The Energy Partnership

• India-Netherlands Roadmap on the Development of Green Hydrogen Cooperation and in Renewable Energy.
• Establishment of a Joint Working Group under the renewed Memorandum of Understanding MoU on Co-operation in the Field of Renewable Energy.
• Joint Statement of Intent between NITI Aayog and the Netherlands for Collaboration on Projects for the Energy Sector and Energy Transition.

Agriculture and Animal Husbandry

• The two sides established the Indo-Dutch Centre of Excellence for Flowers in West Tripura Agriculture/Animal Husbandry.
• India and the Netherlands also established the Indo-Dutch Centre of Excellence on Training in Dairy at the Centre of Excellence for Animal Husbandry (CEAH), Bengaluru.
• The two sides signed a joint Declaration between the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature of the Netherlands on Collaboration in Animal Husbandry and Dairying.

Health and Research

• Letter Of Intent between the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on Cooperation/Collaboration in Health.
• Agreement between the Government of the Republic of India and the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Customs Matters.

Education and Collaboration

• Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of India and the Government of the Netherlands on cooperation in the field of Higher Education, Education/Culture.
• Memorandum of Understanding on Academic Cooperation between Nalanda University, India and the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.
• Memorandum of Understanding between Leiden University Libraries and the Archaeological Survey of India.
