Ready for 23 hours of trade? An exchange has taken its next step towards it

Nasdaq, whose flagship exchange hosts some of the world’s largest technology companies, plans to introduce a new overnight trading session from 9 pm to 4 am ET, potentially taking the Nasdaq Stock Market to nearly 23 hours of trading a day, five days a week.

The new session is currently expected to begin on December 6, 2026, although the launch remains subject to US Securities and Exchange Commission approval and readiness of the securities information processor (SIP).

The proposed schedule would allow trading from 9 pm on Sunday through 8 pm on Friday, with a one-hour, industry-wide pause from 8 pm to 9 pm ET each day for processing and transition to the next trading date.

Nasdaq’s existing trading hours of 4 am to 8 pm ET will otherwise remain unchanged.

The move comes as Nasdaq looks to expand access to US equities globally amid rising demand from investors outside the US.

What changes for investors?

The new overnight session will require market participants to obtain new ports for order entry.

However, not all order types available during regular trading will be supported overnight. Market orders and certain opening and closing orders will not be available during the new session.

Orders entered during the overnight session that remain outstanding at 4 am ET will be cancelled and can be re-entered when the next trading session begins.

Nasdaq also plans to introduce additional safeguards for overnight trading, including static price bands that would reject orders placed outside specified limits, subject to regulatory approval.

Trading activity during the new session will be distributed through a separate market-data feed, while Nasdaq plans to introduce new Nasdaq Plus products to provide broader market coverage across the expanded trading day.

The expanded schedule will apply to the Nasdaq Stock Market. Nasdaq Texas, PSX and Nasdaq’s options exchanges will continue to operate on their existing schedules.

Current Nasdaq trading hours

At present, Nasdaq operates three trading sessions on weekdays:

Pre-market: 4 am to 9:30 am ET
Regular market: 9:30 am to 4 pm ET
Post-market: 4 pm to 8 pm ET

Under the proposed expansion, the new 9 pm to 4 am ET overnight session would effectively fill the current gap between the post-market and pre-market sessions.

The regular US market session from 9:30 am to 4 pm ET, marked by the Opening and Closing Crosses, would continue to set prices and serve as the key reference point for market activity.
