Rohtak launches Daily 15-Minute Reading Challenge to improve literacy in government schools

Project Vishwas and reading initiative aim to transform education system in Rohtak

ROHTAK: In a significant move to overhaul government school education, the Rohtak district administration, under Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta, has launched two flagship educational programs. The initiatives, namely a “Daily 15-Minute Reading Challenge” and “Project Vishwas,” aim to boost foundational literacy and foster holistic student development across the district.During a Monthly Review Meeting of the Department of School Education and Samagra Shiksha, the findings of the Competency Review Programme (CRP) and the Digital Skill Passbook were discussed. While students showed positive growth in foundational literacy and numeracy, the assessment highlighted difficulties in reading unseen passages and comprehension. To bridge this gap, the Daily 15-Minute Reading Challenge has been introduced in all Government Primary Schools. Following the Zero Period, students will spend fifteen minutes daily reading books of their choice—such as storybooks, biographies, and newspapers—under teacher supervision to cultivate lifelong reading habits.Concurrently, Project Vishwas, implemented by DIET Madina, has been rolled out across 43 Cluster Resource Centres (CRCs) for students of Classes VI to VIII. The project aims to build communication confidence, leadership, learning resilience, and life skills through interactive activities like role-plays, group discussions, and public speaking. Specialized training for cluster heads and teachers was completed in June, and the project is being monitored weekly.Furthermore, progress was reviewed for other major initiatives, including the Digital Skill Passbook, which tracks individual competencies to aid targeted teaching. The DC also lauded the success of the Joyful Holiday Homework, the Mathematics Olympiad Coaching in 25 schools, and the Super-40 Programme for IIT-JEE/NEET aspirants.Additionally, the administration reviewed Samagra Shiksha infrastructure projects and mandated regular inspections of PM POSHAN Mid-Day Meals to ensure high hygiene and nutrition standards. DC Sachin Gupta urged all educators to work in mission mode to position Rohtak as Haryana’s leading educational hub.
