US Treasuries have been considered one of the most reliable assets in times of turbulence. Known for their extreme liquidity and value, these dollar-denominated bonds have suffered a hit over the past few years, yet they remain one of the most sought-after government bonds in the world. Based on the data released for June this year, some of its largest holders, Japan and China have been net sellers, while India has seen a small purchase. Here’s a look at the top 10 countries with the largest US treasury holdings:
Japan | The Land of the Rising Sun tops the list yet again. According to data from the United States Department of the Treasury, Japan holds US treasuries worth over $1.116 trillion as of June 2026. The figure is down from the $1.21 trillion Tokyo held nearly 6 years ago, in January 2020, and down from the $1.14 trillion they held in May.
United Kingdom | Cementing its position, and after surpassing China, the United Kingdom comes in at second place. As of June 2026, London had treasuries worth close to a trillion at $939.9 billion, compared to the $450 billion it held in January 2020. It must be noted that, unlike Japan and China, the UK has bought more US treasuries over the last 6 years. However, the figure is also lower than the $948 billion the UK held in May.
China | We are back amongst the Asian powerhouses, as China comes in third. The second-largest economy holds US treasuries worth $633.4 billion, as of June 2026. This figure from Beijing is a far cry from its $1.07 trillion holding in 2020, as its holdings have progressively shrunk over the past half-decade. The holdings are also lower than the $659.3 billion figure in May.
Belgium | The first EU nation on the list, Belgium holds US treasuries worth $482.5 billion as of June 2026. The country, which is the size of the US state of Hawaii (one of its smallest states), has more than doubled its holdings from 2020, when Brussels held $206 billion worth of US bonds. The figure has also increased from the $472 billion held in May.
Canada | Coming in at number 6 is the US’ northern neighbour. Ottawa holds $459.6 billion worth of US treasuries. Despite frosty relations between the North American giants, that has resulted in back-and-forth, Canada has tripled its treasury holdings since 2020, when the value stood at $157.9 billion. Canada was a significant buyer of US treasuries in June, as the number stood at $435 billion in May.
Cayman Islands | The Caribbean island is one of the biggest holders of US treasuries. As of June 2025, the Cayman Islands held US treasuries worth $453.1 billion, which is nearly double the $225.1 billion held in January 2020, but lower than the $471.3 billion held in May.
France | A major European nation that holds significant US treasuries is France. The second-largest EU economy holds $389.9 billion worth of treasury securities, as of June 2026. Paris has nearly tripled its holdings from 6 years ago, when it held bonds worth $134 billion in 2020. The figure is nearly the same as the $393.1 billion held in May.
Ireland | Ireland, yet another nation with ‘fluid’ tax laws, has US bond holdings worth $353.5 billion. The figure for Dublin has steadily improved from its figure of $271.7 billion in 2020. The figure in May stood at $357.2 billion.
Taiwan | Coming in at number 9 is the island territory of Taiwan. The island, which houses chip giant TSMC, holds US treasuries worth $302.5 billion. Taipei’s holdings have largely remained stagnant from a year ago, when it was $307.2 billion.
