Belgium produced a ruthless attacking display to defeat tournament co-hosts United States 4-1 at Seattle Stadium, booking their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals and bringing the Americans’ home-soil campaign to an abrupt end. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice in the opening half before Hans Vanaken capitalised on a costly defensive blunder and Romelu Lukaku added the finishing touch in stoppage time. Despite Mauricio Pochettino’s side dominating possession for long spells, Belgium’s clinical finishing and ability to punish mistakes proved decisive as they advanced to a quarter-final meeting with Spain at Los Angeles Stadium on July 10.

Belgium seize control with devastating first-half double

Much of the build-up had centred on FIFA’s controversial decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s automatic one-match ban following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, allowing the striker to start after the governing body invoked Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code. Once the match began, however, Belgium quickly shifted the spotlight onto events on the pitch.Rudi Garcia’s side settled immediately and almost found an early breakthrough when a Belgian corner was only partially cleared to Timothy Castagne on the edge of the penalty area. The full-back struck a powerful effort through a crowded box, forcing Matt Freese into an outstanding diving save that offered an early warning of the pressure to come.Belgium continued to dominate the opening exchanges. Their aggressive press repeatedly disrupted the American build-up, and another dangerous move saw Dodi Lukebakio burst forward before cutting the ball back for Youri Tielemans. Arriving in space inside the area, Tielemans dragged his effort narrowly wide, passing up another promising opportunity. The breakthrough finally arrived in the ninth minute. Leandro Trossard worked space down the left before delivering a teasing cross that the United States defence failed to deal with cleanly. As the loose ball bounced dangerously inside the area, Nicolas Raskin reacted quickest, gathering possession before sliding a composed pass across the six-yard box. Charles De Ketelaere timed his movement perfectly and calmly poked home from close range to give Belgium a deserved 1-0 lead.

The United States gradually settled after the difficult opening and enjoyed longer spells of possession, eventually finishing the match with 57 per cent of the ball and an impressive passing accuracy of 89 per cent compared to Belgium’s 83 per cent. Yet despite circulating possession effectively, clear-cut opportunities remained scarce against Belgium’s organised defensive shape.Their equaliser arrived in the 31st minute from a fortunate but well-earned set piece. After Balogun was fouled just outside the penalty area, Malik Tillman stepped up over the free-kick and drove a powerful effort towards goal. The strike cannoned into the Belgian wall before taking a heavy deflection that completely wrong-footed Thibaut Courtois, leaving the goalkeeper stranded as the ball rolled into the opposite corner to make it 1-1.

Any momentum generated by the equaliser disappeared almost immediately.Belgium responded within two minutes with a move that perfectly illustrated their attacking quality. Trossard again found space on the left flank and delivered an inviting looping cross into the penalty area. De Ketelaere ghosted away from his marker, met the delivery with a perfectly timed run and powered a close-range header beyond Freese to restore Belgium’s advantage at 2-1. The quickfire response stunned the Seattle crowd and left Mauricio Pochettino visibly frustrated on the touchline after watching his side concede almost immediately following their equaliser.

Freese error proves decisive as Belgium punish every mistake

The United States attempted to begin the second half with greater urgency, pushing Christian Pulisic and Balogun further forward in search of another equaliser. Belgium, however, remained composed defensively while continuing to threaten whenever they transitioned quickly. The contest was effectively decided in the 57th minute following a catastrophic defensive mistake.A long Belgian ball over the top appeared relatively harmless, but confusion between the American defence and goalkeeper Matt Freese proved costly. Freese rushed well outside his penalty area intending to clear the danger before hesitating under pressure from De Ketelaere. The loose ball fell kindly for substitute Hans Vanaken, who instantly recognised the unattended goal and calmly rolled a long-range finish into the empty net. Veteran defender Tim Ream desperately sprinted back and launched into a sliding attempt to prevent the goal, but the ball crossed the line comfortably to hand Belgium a commanding 3-1 lead.

The setback became even more damaging when captain Christian Pulisic was forced off following a collision with Tielemans, further reducing the Americans’ attacking threat during the closing stages.Pochettino’s side continued to search for a route back into the contest despite the deficit. Sebastian Berhalter went close with a powerful long-range strike that drifted narrowly wide, while Balogun finally found space behind Belgium’s defence after being released by a superb lofted pass. Advancing from a tight angle, the striker attempted to beat Courtois at his near post, but the towering Belgian goalkeeper stood firm and produced another important save to deny the hosts any hope of a late comeback.Belgium’s attacking efficiency remained the defining difference between the two sides. Although the United States controlled possession, Belgium consistently created the clearer openings, finishing with 15 total shots, seven on target and five corners compared to the Americans’ six shots, only two of which tested Courtois. With the United States committing numbers forward in stoppage time, Belgium delivered one final blow on the counter-attack. Jérémy Doku accelerated into open space before threading a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Romelu Lukaku. The experienced striker held off his defender, drove into the penalty area and confidently swept his finish beyond Freese in the third minute of added time to complete an emphatic 4-1 victory.

Belgium finished the evening without receiving a single booking, while the United States picked up two yellow cards during a frustrating night in Seattle. Ultimately, possession statistics counted for little as Belgium demonstrated ruthless efficiency in both penalty areas, punishing every major American mistake to end the co-hosts’ World Cup campaign. The victory sends the Red Devils into the quarter-finals, where they will face Spain in Los Angeles on July 10. For the United States, hopes of reaching a first World Cup quarter-final since 2002 are over, with defensive lapses and missed opportunities bringing an otherwise encouraging home tournament to a disappointing conclusion.
