Defence Ministry signs ₹4,106 crore deals for Navy torpedoes and Air Force satellite

The Ministry of Defence on Thursday, October 15, signed two contracts worth a combined ₹4,106 crore to strengthen the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities and the Indian Air Force’s communications infrastructure.

The agreements cover the supply of indigenous Varunastra heavyweight torpedoes by Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) and the acquisition of the GSAT-7C communication satellite through NewSpace India Ltd. The ministry said the contracts support the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives by promoting domestic defence manufacturing and the development of critical technologies.

The contracts were signed at Kartavya Bhawan-2 in New Delhi in the presence of Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition) A Anbarasu.

Bharat Dynamics bags ₹1,543 crore torpedo order

BDL has signed a contract with the Indian Navy to supply heavyweight torpedoes for approximately ₹1,307 crore, excluding taxes, the defence public sector undertaking said in an exchange filing on Thursday.

The Ministry of Defence valued the Varunastra contract at ₹1,543 crore, including taxes. The order is scheduled to be completed within 42 months, according to BDL’s filing.

The company said the contract was awarded by a domestic entity and did not involve any interest of its promoter or promoter group in the awarding entity. It also clarified that the order was not a related-party transaction.

Varunastra is an indigenously developed, ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo designed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory. Its manoeuvring capabilities allow it to engage submarines at long ranges, strengthening the Navy’s ability to counter underwater threats.

BDL shares were trading nearly flat at ₹1,128.40 on the NSE around 3 pm on Thursday, down 0.05%. The stock has declined about 0.3% over the past month and 23.6% so far in 2026.

NewSpace India gets ₹2,563 crore satellite contract

The defence ministry also signed a ₹2,563-crore contract with Bengaluru-based NewSpace India Ltd for the GSAT-7C communication satellite for the Indian Air Force.

The satellite, designed, developed and manufactured indigenously, is expected to provide secure and reliable communications for the Air Force’s assets, improving connectivity and operational effectiveness.

BDL secured ₹811 crore Air Force order in September

The latest contract follows another defence ministry order awarded to BDL last month.

On September 23, the ministry signed a contract worth ₹810.79 crore with the company for 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) and associated equipment for the Indian Air Force. The agreement was signed under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide weapon designed for aircraft such as the Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30 MKI. It can be launched from a distance to engage targets at enemy airfields.
