The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for employers to file the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and pay statutory contributions for September 2026 to October 31. The earlier deadline was October 15.
The EPFO announced the extension in a post on X on October 14, giving employers an additional 16 days to complete the filing and payment process for the September wage month.
Why has EPFO extended the ECR deadline?
The extension follows the revision of the statutory wage ceiling for mandatory EPF coverage from ₹ 15,000 to ₹ 25,000 per month, effective September 17, 2026. The change requires employers to update payroll systems and revise employee-wise contribution calculations.

The mid-month revision has created additional compliance requirements for employers, including changes to payroll configurations and the calculation of contributions for employees. The extension provides additional time to complete these processes.
What is ECR?
The Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) is a monthly electronic return submitted by employers through the EPFO portal. It contains employee-wise wage details and contribution information for the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI).

The return enables employers to report employee wages and the corresponding contributions under the applicable social security schemes. Accurate employee details and contribution calculations are important for ensuring that the information submitted to the EPFO matches the employer’s payroll records.
What should employers do before the deadline?
Employers should review their payroll records and ensure that employee-wise wage details and statutory contribution calculations reflect the applicable requirements following the wage ceiling revision. They should also verify the information entered in the ECR before submitting the return through the EPFO portal.
Employers must complete both the filing process and payment of the applicable statutory contributions by October 31 for the September 2026 wage month. The extension provides additional time for compliance but does not remove the obligation to submit the return and pay the dues.
The revised deadline applies specifically to the September 2026 wage month. Employers should continue to follow the applicable filing and payment schedules for other wage months.
