The channel is not limited to general announcements. It also directs members to educational material, including YouTube videos explaining different aspects of provident fund-related services and schemes.
Among the topics covered are EPF advance withdrawals, contributions to the provident fund after an employee returns to work and the payment mechanism under the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana.
What information does the EPFO WhatsApp channel provide?
The educational material shared through the channel includes information on:
- EPF advance withdrawals
- Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana
- EPF contributions after rejoining employment
- Other EPFO services and awareness-related information
Members can also use the EPFO’s official website to access information on services such as EPF Advance, PF withdrawals, UAN activation, claims and transfers, KYC and pension-related facilities.
The EPF scheme is designed to help employees build retirement savings. It offers interest on accumulated savings, employer contributions and financial support for families. The scheme includes a 12% contribution rate, online access to EPF passbooks, account transfer facilities, nomination options and provisions for withdrawing funds.
EPFO had earlier planned WhatsApp-based services
The move to use WhatsApp for member communication comes against the backdrop of plans reported earlier this year to make EPFO services available through the messaging platform.
In May, the organisation was reportedly working on a WhatsApp-based service for its members. A PTI report, quoting Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, said the decision was linked to the widespread use of WhatsApp among people across India.
Several banks already provide customers with WhatsApp-based services. These allow users to carry out tasks such as checking account balances, obtaining statements, managing cards and accessing other banking facilities. Customers generally need to send a ‘Hi’ from their registered mobile number to use such services.
How the proposed EPFO WhatsApp service was expected to work
Under the proposed system, EPFO subscribers would be able to contact the organisation through a verified WhatsApp number. Members would initiate the interaction by sending a ‘Hello’ message to the number, which would feature a green tick indicating verification.
The service was also expected to send EPFO-related information to members on their registered mobile numbers. It was planned to support local and regional languages, enabling subscribers to communicate in a language of their choice.
EPFO simplifies partial PF withdrawal rules
The EPFO has also changed the framework governing partial provident fund withdrawals. Earlier this year, it combined 13 different withdrawal provisions into three categories — Essential Needs, Housing Needs and Special Circumstances.Following the changes, eligible members can withdraw up to 100% of their PF balance. The limits applicable to withdrawals for education and marriage have also been increased, while the minimum service requirement has been brought down to 12 months.
The revised framework also allows members to seek a withdrawal under the Special Circumstances category without specifying a reason.
The changes are aimed at allowing eligible claims to be settled automatically, while ensuring that 25% of the PF balance remains invested for retirement.
EPFO increases auto-settlement limit to ₹5 lakh
The auto-settlement facility is designed to reduce the time taken to process eligible PF withdrawal claims. Instead of requiring manual processing, qualifying applications can be handled electronically after submission.
Under the facility, members can receive the withdrawn amount within three days once an eligible application has been processed.
The EPFO has increased the maximum amount that can be processed through auto-settlement to ₹5 lakh from ₹1 lakh. The facility covers requirements such as marriage, education, illness and housing.
